We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Parents, please remind all students to BE PROACTIVE in turning in daily assignments, as we have only 14 school days until the end of Semester 1. December 19, 2014, will end the 2nd nine weeks. You may access Infinite Campus online to check grades daily. Habit 2 – Ms. Shipley and the Grizzly choir BEGAN WITH THE END IN MIND; practicing all semester for their upcoming December 12th, concert. Please come out and support this fine program – doors open at 6pm, as the event begins at 6:30. Habit 3 – Spencer County Middle School Cheer, literally PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST, as they brought home the Regional Championship trophy to Taylorsville!!!!! Please come out and support these girls as they advance to the State Competition at Eastern Kentucky University, on January 10th. Habit 4 – SCMS 7th grader Hunter Wethington was THINKING WIN-WIN over Thanksgiving Break, traveling to Charlotte, NC, to compete in the Footlocker National Cross Country Meet. We are so proud to announce that Hunter placed 6th overall and was named to the South All Conference Team! Habit 5 – Spencer Middle will SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD from December 8th - 19th, as we MAP assess all students to check for mid-year academic growth. Please urge your son/daughter to be present at school and give a great effort! Habit 6 – The Spencer Magnet caught us SYNERGIZING on November 19th; publishing a piece on school-wide writing within professional learning communities. You may access Infinite Campus online to check grades daily. Habit 2 – Please urge your child to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND; after returning from Thanksgiving break, we will have only fifteen school days until the 2nd nine weeks ends. Semester Exams will be administered on the last day for students on December 19th. Prepare now! Habit 3 – Spencer County Middle School Cheer, literally PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST yesterday, as they brought home the Regional Championship trophy to Taylorsville!!!!! Please come out and support these girls as they advance to the State Competition at Eastern Kentucky University, on January 10th. Habit 4 – Grizzly students, parents and teachers were THINKING WIN-WIN this past Thursday! 674 of our 691 students were present. We tell students they must be present to learn, bravo to each of the more than 97% that was in attendance. When students are in school, it’s a win-win! Habit 5 – It’s always time to SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD! This Tuesday we will be administering “Learning Checks” to all grades to measure the amount of content students have learned up to this point in their classes. Please do not miss this rather important day! Habit 6 – I pray that everyone has the opportunity to SYNERGIZE with family and friends over Thanksgiving, as I plan to do myself. I would like say THANKS to each of you for GIVING us the opportunity to make a difference in your child’s life. We’re truly blessed to do what we do! Habit 2 – SCMS and SCES PTSO’s decided to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND three years ago; planning to purchase an all new digital sign for our highway entrance. This vision has become a reality, and will serve as another avenue of communication and celebrate student success! Habit 3 – We always like to PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST; student achievement! Our Grizzly Dance Team competed over the weekend at Bethlehem High School and won it all; finishing first place and named Grand Champions!!!! Habit 4 – November 11, was Veteran’s Day at SCMS; we were THINKING WIN-WIN as we honored nearly 100 vet’s that risked it all for freedom’s sake! The day began with our annual pancake breakfast for Veteran’s in the Grizzly Café. Habit 5 – Ms. Ashley McGaughey and Ms. Lillian Mathews chose to SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by completing the rigorous National Board Certification. I am very proud to say, SCMS now has ten NBCT: Ms. Cox, Mr. McClain, Mr. Buynak, Ms. Blandford, Ms. Gross, Ms. Brown, Ms. Rowland, and Ms. Kennedy. Habit 6 – SCMS and SCHS Drama Departments SYNERGIZED to produce Alice in Wonderland! Over 100 students worked on this production! Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the amazing work of these students! Habit 2 – Spencer County Schools elects to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND by progress monitoring student’s with NWEA’s MAP Assessment three times per year (Fall, Winter, Spring). We are very excited to announce that our Fall MAP Assessment shows our students scoring ABOVE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE IN 7 of 10 tested areas; up from 1 of 10, last Fall. Great job to ALL STUDENTS!!! Habit 3 – SCMS PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST Friday, recognizing Grizzly Heroes: Jeremiah Potter, Moni McCoy, Chandani McKenna-Vega, Matt Drury, and Jenna Newton. The SC BOE recognized Honor’s Choir students: Haylee Cox, Brittney Levesque, Trinity Marshall, Maisah Johnson, Mckenzie Woods, Courtney Spaulding, Taylor Nation, Paige Tessier, Brianna Mena. Great Job students! Habit 4 – November 11, is Veteran’s Day at SCMS; we will be THINKING WIN-WIN as we honor those that have risked it all for freedom’s sake! The day will begin with our annual pancake breakfast for Veteran’s in the Grizzly Café. Habit 6 – SCMS and SCHS Drama Departments have SYNERGIZED to produce Alice in Wonderland! We have close to 100 students working on this production! To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – We would like to remind all driver’s to please BE PROACTIVE and utilize the parent pickup/drop-off traffic line. It is prohibited for any drop-offs to occur in the middle of the lot. Thank you, as this is to ensure student safety. Habit 2 – Grizzly Chorus will BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND at tomorrow’s Talent Show, beginning at 6pm. Come out and watch, as students showcase their skills and chase their dreams! Habit 3 – SCMS PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST Friday, with an Academic Pep Rally to recognize hundreds of students who excelled in numerous areas such as: KPREP Proficient/Distinguished, EXPLORE Benchmarks, Academic Team, Duke Tip, and many others. The day was capped off with a surprise performance by local County Musical Artist JD Shelburne. Habit 4 – November 11, is Veteran’s Day at SCMS; we will be THINKING WIN-WIN as we honor those that have risked it all for freedom’s sake! The day will begin with our annual pancake breakfast for Veteran’s in the Grizzly Café. This week’s spotlight is on middle school student-athlete Hunter Wethington; wish Hunter luck this week as he prepares to run at the High School State Cross Country Meet in Lexington, on November 8th. Congrats Hunter, and thanks for representing SCMS well!
