We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – The Spencer County Crisis Management Team allowed us to BE PROACTIVE on Friday, as a random senseless bomb threat on a bathroom stall, led to all classes being moved to a safe remote location (Spencer Elementary). Protocol was followed; all classrooms were strategically assigned a room at SCES, learning then continued and both schools were dismissed on regular schedule. Habit 2 – Parents and students can BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND as report cards come home this Thursday, October 16th. If you are interested in emailing one of our teachers to discuss how 1st Quarter grades may effect Final Grades, click here. Habit 3 – SCMS PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST when recognizing August and September “Grizzly Heroes”: Makala Adkins, Jasmine Jenkins, Diamond Nelson, Moni McCoy, Chloe King, Felicity McDonald, Chelsea Bruner, Connor Strothman, Dakota Hoskins, Seth Caudill, Daniel Jett, Will Moon, Brent Muddell, Tristin Lewis, Malik Taylor, Dalton King. Congrats to all these superb students! Habit 4 – Spencer County School District is THINKING WIN-WIN in recognizing all Proficient and Distinguished students at SCHS on Dec. 4. These students have catapulted Spencer Co. Schools to “High Proficient” status; the highest state assessment scores in school district history! Habit 5 – School Health Nurse, Kathy Dippel RN, will SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD on Thursday, October 16th when meeting with ALL 7th grade girls to discuss Health, Hygiene & Puberty, utilizing The Being Girl Program. Nurse Dippel will also meet with ALL 8th grade girls to discuss the importance of BSE (breast self-exam) in recognition of National Breast Health Awareness Month, utilizing The Get in Touch Program. Mr. Hume will be educating all 7th and 8th grade boys on proper hygiene. Habit 6 –SYNERGIZE with me on Twitter to stay current on school happenings. Follow Me! Habit 7 – Four days until Fall Break; SHARPEN THE SAW and reflect on a great 1st Nine Weeks! Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS To: All SCMS Stakeholders
We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Remind students to BE PROACTIVE turning in class work and missed assignments; as the end of the 1st Nine weeks is THIS week (October 9th) with report cards coming home October 16th. If you are interested in emailing one of our teachers for a conference click here. Habit 2 – Parents can BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND by reviewing student Individualized Learning Plans (ILP’s). Each student has taken this ‘interest inventory’, which assists students in selecting clubs, classes, and college/career decisions. Please contact SCMS Assistant Principal, Erin Demyan, for more information. Habit 3 – Thanks to Ms. Burge for choosing to PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST by posting distinguished student work on her class website! Click here to see how great our students are! Habit 4 – Ms. Gabbard, is THINKING WIN-WIN with her “Flipped Classroom”! Please click here, to see how she’s creating learning opportunities with homework videos for students and parents alike! Habit 5 – We want to SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by asking parents to participate in the Kentucky Incentives for Prevention (KIP) survey after fall break to 6th and 8th graders. Information was sent home Friday, October 3rd. If you Do Not want your child to participate, simply complete the form and return with your child to SCMS. Learn more about this youth substance abuse prevention initiative at www.KIP.com Habit 6 – SCMS, University of Louisville Dental Schools, Louisville Water Co., and local dentists SYNERGIZED on October 2, to provide Smile Kentucky screenings to participating 6th grade students. A 30 minute dental education was also provided by Ms. Brown and Ms. Parnell. Habit 7 – Come out, SHARPEN THE SAW, and support our Grizzly Band & Choir. The first Chorus concert of the year will begin at 7pm on October 6th, and the first Band Concert will be on October 9th. All are welcome! Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS |
