Good morning SCMS families,
We are very delighted to announce that for the third straight year, SCMS is a DISTINGUISHED middle school in KY! Thank you parents! This Friday, will be our annual Academic Pep Rally - where we recognize outstanding academic achievement of our students. We are also going up to SCHS to present last year's 8th grade class with a banner to signify the first class in school history with three consecutive distinguished banners. On December 7th, all distinguished high school and middle school students will be recognized in a ceremony at SCHS (more info to come). We will be having our November Parent Academy on November 14th from 5-7pm. Parents along with students will be doing hands on activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math. Students should have brought home their MAP scores with report cards prior to Fall Break. Overall, scores were great! We are ahead of the national average in 8 of 9 tested areas. MAP scores have a variety of uses including student schedules and RTI (student interventions). If you have questions concerning MAP and/or RTI please contact [email protected] or [email protected] . All 8th graders attended the INSPIRE Conference yesterday at the KY Expo Center, where they met possible future employers and experts in various professions. This is part of our Work Ready initiative that we have partnered with SCHS and College/Career Coach Brandy Scott on. Thanks to Ms. Mathews for organizing this event. The following students presented the SCMS "Kindness Rocks" project at Monday nights monthly BOE meeting: Bralen Spencer, Ashleigh Jones, Grace Collins, Kontessa Muncy, Taylor Borders, Addison Roberts, and Gaby Hernandez. Good luck to our girls basketball team who are playing this week in their conference tournament. Big win last night by the varsity team over Taylor County. 7th grade plays tonight at 6pm vs OKH at home, and 8th plays tomorrow night at Bardstown vs Bloomfield at 7:15. 7th grade finals are Monday at SCMS, and 8th grade is Nov. 2nd at Bardstown. Huge thanks to our dance team and cheerleaders as well! Click here for the latest edition of the Grizzly News! https://youtu.be/EK8f6w_HTgQ Have a blessed week! MM

We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Parents can BE PROACTIVE with the free Infinite Campus App, which sends push notifications every time a teacher enters a grade for your son or daughter. Follow the four simple steps seen here: http://publicschools.spencercounty.ky.gov/parents/icportal/. For more information email [email protected]. Habit 2 – BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! Report Cards will be sent home on October 12th prior to Fall Break. Check those backpacks! Fall Break is October 13-23th. Habit 3 – Kudo’s to all our parents, students, and staff for PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST and scoring Distinguished as a school for the third consecutive year. This is the first time in school history that we’ve had back-to-back-to-back Distinguished years. Go Grizzlies! Habit 4 – On October 3rd, we will be THINKING WIN-WIN at our Bi-annual Parent Involvement Night. This is a great opportunity to walk through your students 7 periods schedule and meet their teachers. Topics are grade level relevant & students are welcome to attend. Refreshments - 5:30. Habit 5 – The Grizzly News Crew is SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by highlighting our school weekly in a quick and simple way for those with a busy schedule. Click here to see Episode 2 - https://youtu.be/Ek-Cb0PUC-0 . Habit 6 – SCMS = SYNERGY! The Community Service Club is sponsoring a coat, hat & glove drive from 10/2-10/12. Please send in new or gently used items that will be donated to the Family Resource & Youth Service Centers, as well as other local charities, to distribute to families in our community. All sizes accepted. Students may leave items at the donation boxes in the great hall when they arrive in the morning. Thanks for your support! Habit 7 – Students in grades 4-8 can SHARPEN THE SAW by joining the wrestling club on October 5th and 6th from 5:30-7pm in the SCMS Great Hall. Participants will need a physical and a copy of their birth certificate to sign-up. More information can be found in the main office. Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS |
