We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Everyone can BE PROACTIVE and plan their week by clicking https://www.keepandshare.com/calendar/show_month.php?i=2043672 to view gym and extra-curricular schedules at SCMS. Habit 2 – At Spencer Middle, we try to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! Semester 1 ends tomorrow and report cards will be sent home Jan. 9th. There will be no school for students from Dec. 17 - Jan. 2nd. Merry Christmas! Habit 3 – Congratulations, to our entire 6th grade student body for PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST on last week’s MAP Assessment. This group set the school record in both Math and Reading! Kudos to our 7th grade class for setting the school record in Reading. Habit 4 – We want all students THINKING WIN-WIN, unfortunately this is not always the case. Attached is information on suicide prevention that we have discussed with your son/daughter. Feel free to reinforce this information at home. Habit 5 – Ms. Burge, our school counselor is SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by establishing several small support groups such as: Sources of Strength, Sisterhood, Standing Strong, Grief Relief, and more. For more info: [email protected]. Habit 6 – Let’s SYNERGIZE! Three apps to help us as parents monitor our students and help defend cyber-bullying is: Net Nanny- allows parents to block internet sites/topics and send them warnings. For example if the child looks up suicide, the parents will be alerted. Secure Teen- allows parents to view call lists and read text messages. Teen Safe- allows parents to view call lists, read texts, and know their location via GPS. Habit 7 – Several of our students have been out SHARPENING THE SAW! Grizzly Lego Robotics finished 2nd out of 51 schools overall and are now on to the state competition. Grizzly Cheer won regionals and have state in their sights. The 6th grade academic team finished fourth overall at the 6th grade showcase and look forward to District Governor’s Cup in January. Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS

We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 7 – Everyone come out and SHARPEN THE SAW! The SCMS Bands are having their annual Winter Concert this Friday, December 9th. The concert begins 6:30. The SCMS Choirs are hosting their Here Comes Santa concert on December 12th. Students must be there at 5:30, doors open at 6:30 and the concert will begin at 7pm. The SCMS music department would love to have a full house on both nights. Habit 1 – The Grizzly Lego Robotics team learned the importance of BEING PROACTIVE over the past three months. The group worked on their project (Deer and Vehicle Collisions, Keeping Grandma Safe) since August and it payed off Saturday with a 1st place victory. The group also finished 2nd out of 51 teams in the robot challenge. Good luck at state to these kids and coaches. Habit 4 – These students were THINKING WIN-WIN, making All-District band: Sierra Knapper--Flute (8th), Valerie Pucko--Clarinet (7th), Nathan Scheider--Trombone (8th), Ashley Stine--Baritone (8th). Huge shoutout to Ms. Downs, Ms. Greenwell, and Grizzly Cheer. This years squad just finished 1st in Regionals against four teams and move on to compete at the state competition in Lexington on Dec. 17. Habit 6 – SCMS will be SYNERGIZING! As the grand finale to our One Book One School initiative, next Tuesday, Dec. 6th the author of Touching Spirit Bear, Ben Mikaelsen, is visiting the middle school! Students will have a Q & A with Mr. Mikaelsen at the school wide assembly and teachers will attend a session with the author after school as well. Habit 2 – At SCMS we try to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! Mid-terms were sent home last Tuesday, Nov. 22. Winter MAP Testing is coming up: 8th grade (Dec. 7th), 7th grade (Dec. 6th), & 6th Grade (Dec. 7th). 8th grade semester exams will be Dec. 16. 2nd quarter ends Dec. 16th and report cards will go home Jan. 9th. Habit 5 – We are SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD with our annual Christmas Food Drive December 5th to December 9th. We will be giving a special treat to the 1st period class that collects the most perishable food items. Grizzlies Beyond the Bell will be assisting with this food drive by collecting the items after school, every day, and keeping a running tally by each class. Attached is the flyer. Habit 3 – 6th graders on the academic team PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST competing at the 6th Grade Showcase event at Shelby West Middle School Saturday and took home several medals. Mason Wright, Tucker Mayfield, Ella Kennedy, or Kaylee Monroe deserve to be commended for bringing home an award in their subject area. The other students on the team deserve congrats too for placing 4th overall in a very competitive new regional group. Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS |
