We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 7 – Everyone come out and SHARPEN THE SAW! Join us for Spencer County Middle School's 3rd Annual Winterfest on Friday, December 2nd. There is a middle school dance from 2:45 until 4:45 and then the family fun begins at 5:00 pm! Habit 1 – Students can BE PROACTIVE and purchase presale Winterfest tickets today through Friday during lunch. VIP passes include dinner, unlimited game tickets and dance admission. Habit 4 – THINK WIN-WIN, come out and bid at this Friday’s Winterfest Auction. Each homeroom has donated a basket to be auctioned and many other things such as: signed UL basketball (Pitino), family fun passes to several places around Louisville, theater tickets, a guitar with case, Holiday World tickets, an American Girl doll, Cincinnati Reds tickets and SO MUCH MORE! See attached list for more info.! Habit 6 – SCMS will be SYNERGIZING! We will have craft and vendor booths, games for kids of all ages, an arcade, a Book fair (perfect for gifts for the family!), there will be a dodgeball tournament, Holy Smokes, Kona Ice, funnel cakes, and cotton candy. There will be holiday crafts for little kids and an exciting silent-to-live auction that will begin around 7:15. Habit 2 – At SCMS we try to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! Mid-terms were sent home last Tuesday, Nov. 22. Winter MAP Testing is coming up: 8th grade (Dec. 7th), 7th grade (Dec. 6th), & 6th Grade (Dec. 7th). 2nd quarter ends Dec. 16th and report cards will go home Jan. 9th. Habit 5 – We are SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by assuring all community members get an equal opportunity to acquire old SCMS trophys. Attached is a list of the surplussed items that will be for sale at Winterfest. Habit 3 – Congratulations Sydney Druin, Justin Johnson, Emily McGill, Dawson Sheble, and first place Jason Combs, for PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST and being recognized as current AR Leaders. We are very proud of the leadership skills they are displaying. Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS

We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – SCMS was BEING PROACTIVE when we trained all students in internet etiquette and cyber safety in August. All students completed and received their digital driver’s licenses prior to logging on. Thanks to Ms. Gabbard and all faculty and staff for teaching kids appropriate online behavior! Habit 2 – At SCMS we try to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! Mid-terms end tomorrow and reports will be sent home next Tuesday, Nov. 22. There will be no school Nov. 23-15th, Happy Thanksgiving! Habit 4 – On 11th, we were THINKING WIN-WIN by recognizing over 100 Veteran’s at SCMS’ annual ‘Pancakes for Patriot’s event. A huge thanks to everyone who helped plan and attend this program. One person said afterwards, “It is the best event in twenty-five years” they have attended. Students waved flags, Full Col. Jack Kennedy was keynote speaker, and a slideshow featuring: years of service, branch, and SCMS student relation, was shown. Habit 5 – Ms. Gabbard, is SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by providing students the opportunity to bring in “Food for Fines”. Do you have a book that’s been lost? Instead of paying to replace the book, the library will be accepting food items during November in place of a fine. 3 boxes of food equals one book. Items can include: Ravioli, Spaghetti, Beefaroni, Soups, Mac & Cheese, etc. Habit 6 – SCMS will be SYNERGIZING this week with teachers and administrators from Maurice Bowling Middle School in Owen County. We were contacted after state KPREP results came out. The group wants to see our students in action & discuss how Spencer County Middle has become one of the elite MS’s in KY. Habit 7 – Everyone come out and SHARPEN THE SAW! Our boys’ basketball team will be playing four consecutive nights starting tonight vs Bullitt Lick Middle School. Congrats, to Coach Noel and the guys for finishing second over the weekend at an eight team tournament in Nelson County. Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS |
