We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – This week’s Career Week will assist students in BEING PROACTIVE while emphasizing Career Readiness. On Tuesday, students will experience Reality Store and Finance Park. On Wednesday, 8th graders will visit Campbellsville University, and Thursday all students will hear from more than sixty, Spencer County Graduates that are leaders in their field. Habit 2 – UPDATE!!!! All parents/students can BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND; KPREP State testing for all SCMS students will be May 13-19. Final Exams will be May 22, Belle Field Trip will be on May 26, Graduation practice will be May 27, Graduation and Awards will be May 28. Sixth and Seventh Grade Awards day will be May 26. Habit 3 – SCMS students PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST this weekend, Jack Reynolds finished 11th out of 100 in the State Geography Bee Competition. Congrats, Caden Little who for finishing 8th out of 62 kids in the Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee. Habit 4 – Congrats, Tyler Moehrke, Emily Brown, and Ann Ashley for THINKING WIN-WIN over the weekend competing at UofL in the National History Day Regionals. Tyler Moehrke, will be representing SCMS at state, on April 25 at UK. Habit 5 – Over 600 came out to see Spencer County Schools’ SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD on Saturday, hosting the first annual Spencer County All County Choir Concert. The day was a tremendous display of talent from students of TES, SCES, SCMS, and SCHS. Awesome day! Habit 6 – SCMS and SCES is SYNERGIZING with People’s Bank of Taylorsville with our “Chromebooks for Kids” initiative. People’s donated $6,000 ($3,000 to each SCMS and SCES) last week to the cause. Habit 7 – Grizzly Track SHARPENED THE SAW at their first meet last week; both boys & girls teams placed 4th overall. Trevor Hutt placed 2nd in the 100 hurdles and 3rd in the 300 hurdles. Lindsey Bush placed 1st in the 1600m & 2nd in the 800m. Lucas Hornback placed 2nd in the 1600m. AJ Basham placed 4th in the 1600m & 5th in 800m. McKenzie Bell placed 1st in the 400m & 3rd in 800m. Ben Williams placed 2nd in the 300m hurdles. 4th Grader Wade Hutt finished fifth in the long jump, beaten by only four 8th graders. Go Grizzlies! Respectfully, Matt Mercer

We are very proud of these girls and Dance Coach Desiree Wheatley. Habit 4 – Spencer County Schools are THINKING WIN-WIN, with yet another tool to address bullying; STOP Tipline. Our new school & district website www.spencer.kyschools.us, has a large STOP sign, where students & parents can anonymously report bullying, violence, & risky behavior. Habit 5 – SCMS is trying to SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD; by listing all events on our new website calendar. Click on http://www.spencer.kyschools.us/2/Home and on the right select “View Full Calendar”. Here you can search events by school or the entire district. Extra-curricular practice schedules for all activities can be found under “Athletics” and “Gym Schedule” Habit 6 – SCMS will be SYNERGIZING with Campbellsville University on April 1. The College Readiness focused visit will be provided to all 8th grade students to foster interest and educate students on admissions, scholarships, and career paths. Habit 7 – All students are invited to SHARPEN THE SAW this Friday at our school dance, sponsored by Grizzly Football. On that note, we are very excited to welcome new head football coach Nathan Greenwell, to our SCMS staff. Good luck to our Volleyball girls in their tournament this week at SCMS. There will be a seven period rotation, allowing parents to see each of their child’s teachers. Topics will be grade relevant (8th grade – HS Scheduling, AP Course Requirements, Scholarships, etc.) Habit 2 – 8th Grade parents and students can BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND; Final Exams will be June 1, Belle Field Trip will be on June 2, Graduation practice will be June 3, Graduation and Awards will be June 4 at 10am. Habit 7 – We encourage everyone to SHARPEN THE SAW and volunteer to be a part of the 2015-2016 Parent Teacher Student Organization. Nominations forms for PTSO are attached to this email. Habit 3 – Spencer County Schools has PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST, with calendar updates: last day for students is now June 4, 3rd quarter mid-terms is now March 19th and Reports Cards go home March 26th. Habit 4 – Ms. Stampfer and the Grizzly Band are THINKING WIN-WIN, by collaborating with the University of Louisville on March 13th. Our students will get to play with UofL’s Senior Music Education Class. All 105 members will also compete in the KMEA Concert Assessment on March 18. Habit 5 – SCMS will SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD; the MAP testing window on March 16 – April 17, will show what we know. Habit 4 – Ms. Shipley and the Grizzly Choir are THINKING WIN-WIN, by collaborating with the WU Singers on March 9. The WU Singers will share and perform with the SCMS and SCHS Choir’s in a day sure to be both educational and exciting. Habit 5 – SCMS will SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD; the MAP testing window on March 16 – April 17, will show what we know. Habit 6 – SCMS is SYNERGIZING this week, sending 6th grade band students to Spencer Elementary and Taylorsville Elementary for band demonstrations. This is a great opportunity for students to show what they’ve learned and also get others interested in band.
