We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – SCMS was BEING PROACTIVE when we trained all students in internet etiquette and cyber safety in August. All students completed and received their digital driver’s licenses prior to logging on. Thanks to Ms. Gabbard and all faculty and staff for teaching kids appropriate online behavior! Habit 2 – At SCMS we try to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! Report Cards will be sent home on October 13th prior to Fall Break. Fall Break is October 14-24th. Then, 15 days until Thanksgiving! Habit 3 – Congratulations Gracie Sandusky, Ella Steers, Caleb Curtis, Isaiah Huff, & Trenton Estridge, for PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST and being recognized as Grizzly Heroes last week. We are very proud of the leadership skills they are displaying. Habit 4 – On September 27, we will be THINKING WIN-WIN when Ms. Kentucky will be coming to SCMS about 1:15 to speak with all girls. She also will be speaking to GBB boys and girls after school, in case anyone wants to stay and listen. For more info. contact [email protected]. Habit 5 – Ms. Martin and Family Resource is SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by providing “Sources of Strength” training last week to 18 student selected, student leaders & 6 staff. This is a positive and uplifting initiative that focuses on connecting personally, with resources, supports and activities. They will meet monthly to plan implementation of school-wide campaigns such as: What makes me stronger?, Thankfulness Challenge?, Generosity Challenge?, and Who are our Trusted Adults/Mentors?. Habit 6 – Advanced Art Students are SYNERGIZING with “The Red Scooter” in downtown Taylorsville by hosting a display of student sculptures in celebration of the annual Taylorsville Main Street Progressive Dinner that occurred on Sat. Sept 24th. Artworks will be on display until October 7th. Habit 7 – Everyone come out and SHARPEN THE SAW! Grizzly Football plays in the Conference Championship at Bardstown MS Tuesday at 6pm. PTSO is planning a student tailgate for this Friday at 5:30-6:45 – buses will then take kids to the SCHS vs North Oldham Homecoming Game, parents responsible for students upon arrival. The Fall Band concert will be on Oct 6th, starting at 6:30. 6th grade and 7th grade report at 5:45, 8th grade reports at 6:45. Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS

To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Parents can BE PROACTIVE by attending our Fall Parent Involvement Night this Thursday, Sept. 22. Parents will have an opportunity to follow their son/daughters schedule as we rotate classes every 15 minutes. Food at 5:30 and we start 1st period at 6pm. See attached agendas. Habit 2 – At SCMS we try to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! Report Cards will be sent home on October 13th prior to Fall Break. Fall Break is October 14-24th. Habit 3 – Congratulations Valerie Pucko, Dalton Hardin, Elijah Young, and Cole Wright, for PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST and being recognized as Grizzly Heroes last week. Habit 5 – We are asking everyone to SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD when dropping kids off and picking kids up. Please do not let children out anywhere except directly in front of the main entrance at our designated drop off area. It is not permitted to let kids out by the football field or pull into teacher parking. This could result in an accident. Thank you! Habit 6 – Ms. Gabbard’s SYNERGIZING at the Scholastic Book Fair in the McGill LMC and online! We will be open from 7:15 - 3:00 every day and also during Parent Involvement Night. The online book fair features books we have at our book fair as well as additional titles for a variety of ages. This is a great opportunity to walk through your students 7 periods schedule and meet their teachers. Topics are grade level relevant & students are welcome to attend. Refreshments - 5:30. Habit 5 – SCMS is SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by welcoming part time guidance counselor Beth Burge! Ms. Burge isn’t new to our school as she previously taught 6th grade English. We are excited to have yet another level of support for families and students. You can contact her at [email protected]. Habit 6 – Boys and Girls Basketball are SYNERGIZING in hosting a September 16th Middle School Dance! All are welcome to attend this night of food and fun. The dance is 3-6pm. Habit 7 – Thanks to everyone who came out and SHARPENED THE SAW this week by supporting Grizzly Athletics and attending our faculty tailgate! Football defeated Oldham County last night & we recognized our 8th grade along with Cross Country. Girls’ basketball won three games vs Bloomfield. Students can be proactive by turning in all assignments on time, as Mid-Term Reports will be sent home September 15th. Please look for those at that time. Habit 2 – At SCMS we try to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! MAP Testing has concluded and we are in the process of changing over 100 schedules to assure every student has appropriate levels of support. If your son/daughter needs assistance in Math/Reading you will be hearing from us soon. Habit 3 – Thanks to 8th grader Alex Llanas, for PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST and showing off his artistic abilities by drawing a picture of SCMS that will be displayed in the main office this school year. All are welcome to attend this night of food and fun. The dance is 3-6pm. Habit 7 – Everyone can come out and SHARPEN THE SAW this week by supporting Grizzly Athletics!
