To: All SCMS Stakeholders We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Students can BE PROACTIVE by turning in all assignments as our 1st nine weeks ends next Thursday, Oct. 8. Report Cards go home on October 15. A very useful tool, parents can check grades and receive push notifications on the Infinite Campus App. Habit 2 – We ask all parents & guardians to please BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND, we are planning a 7th grade trip to Washington D.C. and our 8th grade trip is to Chicago. Habit 3 – The following students have PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST and were named last week’s ERQ Leaders of the Week: Bradley Leff, Tori Manley, Peyton Napier, & Carter Ward. Habit 4 – Our Advanced Art Department and Ms. Larue, will be THINKING WIN-WIN this Saturday as they take a Field Trip to the St. James Art Show in Louisville, Ky. Should be a good day of fun and learning. Habit 5 – The first edition of the Grizzly Rumble is out, and it’s our way of SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by updating the student body on current happenings. The school newspaper is also a great way to recognize successes. Please see attached document. Habit 6 – State test scores will be released to the public this Thursday, October 1. We had a wonderful year of SYNERGIZING between parents, students and teachers. Stay tuned for some great news! Habit 7 – Come out and SHARPEN THE SAW tonight and support SCMS Football. The Grizzlies finished the regular season undefeated in conference play and host Bardstown at SCHS tonight at 6pm in the post-season championship! To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Parents and students can BE PROACTIVE by attending our SCMS Parent Involvement Night tonight, see attached flyer. The evening begins at 5:30 with food & drinks in the cafeteria. Please be familiar with your student’s schedule, as you will rotate through each of their classes. Habit 2 – We ask all parents & guardians to please BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND and have students turn in transportation notes no later than 2pm each day. Habit 4 –SCMS is THINKING WIN-WIN by introducing our new 6th grade Student Lighthouse Team Leaders: Rico Walker, Jack Kennedy, Valerie Pucko, Jack Baird, Alyson Howie, and Madison Knotts. Habit 5 – MAP Testing has concluded at SCMS and we are in the process of SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by analyzing student data to better inform our educational decision making in regards to Response to Intervention (RTI). The evening begins at 5:30 with food & drinks in the cafeteria. Please be familiar with your student’s schedule, as you will rotate through each of their classes. Habit 2 – Please encourage students to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND in completing and turning in assignments as mid-term reports will be sent home on September 17. The 1st nine weeks ends October 8 and report cards will be sent home October 15. Habit 3 – Students can PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST, by bringing home their picture proofs this week. Anyone interested may purchase pictures by returning packets to homeroom teachers. Fall retakes are scheduled for November 2. Habit 4 –SCMS is THINKING WIN-WIN by hosting our annual Anti-Bullying Rally for students on Sept. 25 at 1pm. This year’s assembly will be led by nationally renowned speaker, Joe Washington. Joe is known for his upbeat, high energy presentations, sure to get everyone out of their seats! Habit 5 – The Library Media Center and the Youth Service Center are SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD during the month of September as they team up for Food for Fines. Students who have lost a book from the library can replace the cost of the book by donating boxes of individually packaged food items (such as breakfast bars, ravioli, mac & cheese, etc.) to the Youth Service Center's program Backpack Buddies. Habit 6 – Ms. Mathews and SCES are SYNERGIZING on September 23-25. On these days 8th grade students will be conducting a field study with 4th grade students in Science Adaptations. Together we learn more! Habit 7 – Come out and SHARPEN THE SAW and also support our student-athletes this week. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – All students can BE PROACTIVE, and report inappropriate behavior on our anonymous tip-line. Just go to spencer.kyschools.us and click on the red stop sign. Safety first at SCMS! Habit 2 – Please encourage students to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND in completing and turning in assignments as mid-term reports will be sent home on September 17. The 1st nine weeks ends October 8 and report cards will be sent home October 15. Habit 3 – We continue PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST, each and every day at Spencer Middle. Writing will continue to be our school-wide focus for the 15-16 school year. We have practiced Extended Response Questions (ERQ’s) and On-Demand daily now for over a year. Last week during a 9th grade writing seminar, our students hard work was on display as administrators from across the district conducted our bi-annual Learning Walk at SCHS. Habit 4 –SCMS is THINKING WIN-WIN by hosting our annual Anti-Bullying Rally for students on Sept. 25 at 1pm. This year’s assembly will be led by nationally renowned speaker, Joe Washington. Joe is known for his upbeat, high energy presentations, sure to get everyone out of their seats! Habit 5 – At SCMS, we SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by participating in a Safe School Assessment at the end of October. As we are preparing for this team to visit our school, we have been asked to survey all of our students, staff, and parents. Attached to this email is the parent survey. A paper copy of the survey will be sent home with your child this Friday. Habit 6 – The Library Media Center and the Youth Service Center are SYNERGIZING during the month of September as they team up for Food for Fines. Students who have lost a book from the library can replace the cost of the book by donating boxes of individually packaged food items (such as breakfast bars, ravioli, mac & cheese, etc.) to the Youth Service Center's program Backpack Buddies. For each book that is lost, students will need to bring in 3 boxes of items during the month of September in order to have fines forgiven. More information is available at the library and YSC. Habit 7 – Students can SHARPEN THE SAW this Friday at our School Dance, sponsored by the Grizzly Football team. Presale tickets are $6 at lunch this week and $8 at the door. Dance is 6-8pm.
