Hello SC family,
First, thanks to our parents and community for all the support and prayers as we navigate these uncharted waters. I plan on sending a message out formally through our call messenger system as soon as more finalized decisions have been made at the district level. Up to this point we’ve basically been information gathering and “listening” to the needs and concerns of our people. If you have not done so, I encourage you to go back and watch Mr. Adams’ and Mr. Abell’s recent messages at https://www.spencer.kyschools.us/
I completely understand that this is a very scary time. I do feel like having three daughters at each level of our education system really helps me look at it from your perspective as a parent. So, if you elect to send your child to school as I have, I get it. If you and your child choose to participate in virtual learning, I get it. Everyone may be virtual before this year is over, everyone may not. These are the unknowns that no one can predict and it’s changing by the day. That’s why we as a district are trying to give you “options”. Let me try to answer some of the questions about SCMS best I can.
1. The CDC along with state and local leaders are providing us with specific health and safety guidelines for reopening. This is a challenge for every school in the commonwealth, however it’s what must be done to keep our kids and staff safe. So extra cleaning is and will be taking place. Social distancing will take place. Masks will be worn. Basically, here’s what’s happening right now behind the scenes. We are focused on establishing safety routines for face to face, and we are working diligently on educational procedures for those that choose virtual. Your registration choice matters. 2. We want the face to face schedule to look as much like a typical school day as possible. The same as your child has had in the past. Right now that is five days a week, however numbers will dictate whether we can do this or not. More than ever before in history, safety then learning is the focus. If participation rates are so high as we cannot follow safety guidelines we may then look at a hybrid schedule, but that is not ideal.
3. Virtual learning will not be the same as the NTI experience you had to end the year. We will utilize online learning platforms, teacher videos, staff/student discussion sessions, etc. to provide a parent friendly, student paced opportunity. We are taking YOU into consideration while molding this! We know most of you work and we do not want to overwhelm you or our students.
4. There’s a lot of question that are still left to be answered and they will be very soon. What about sports with the virtual option? What happens if a student/staff member tests positive for COVID? What about AP/Dual Credit (HS)? What about GBB after school? The list goes on....
Rest assured, Mr. Adams and the SCBOE are doing everything they can. We have and will continue to meet weekly at the school and district level. Please look for much more information in the near future. Until then feel free to email me at [email protected] , I’ll do the best I can to answer your questions.
