We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Students can BE PROACTIVE by turning in all assignments. Third quarter report cards were sent home last Thursday. Spring Break is April 2-10. There is school April 1 & 11. A very useful tool for parents is the Infinite Campus App; where you can check grades and receive push notifications daily. Habit 2 – Let’s BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND by looking at key dates as we go down the stretch: KPREP is May 10-13 & 16. 8th Grade Graduation is scheduled for May 25. All Students Last Day, 6th/7th Awards Day & 8th Grade Belle Trip will be on May 26. Teacher’s closing day will be May 27th. Habit 3 – This week we PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST with ‘Career Week’ at SCMS. Leaders from our community and students from SCHS will be making real world connections to the 7 Habits. 8th graders visit Campbellsville University and all students will participate in the Virtual Reality Store. Habit 4 – The University of Louisville Men’s basketball senior guard Damion Lee, was THINKING WIN-WIN when he visited our school Monday to discuss the importance of “Perseverance” in life. The star challenged school officials via Twitter Saturday night to get 500 retweets within 24 hours for a surprise appearance. Thanks to our students, staff, and community members for rallying support & making the event a reality. Lee, who will be participating in the 28th State Farm Three Point Championship on ESPN at 9pm Thursday in Texas, practiced for the competition allowing students to participate before surprisingly hitting a half-court shot prior to his farewell. Habit 5 – SCMS YSC is SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD! Social Media, peer pressure, parties, drug trends & underage drinking....it can be a challenge raising teens today! Operation Parent's "Parenting 101" class is the perfect way to educate, equip and empower parents of adolescents to prevent and intervene regarding the issues that teens & pre-teens face today and realize they are not alone! Classes beginning 4/12...contact the YSC for details. 477-3222 or 477-6934 Habit 6 – We will be SYNERGIZING with SCHS Principal Mr. Haun on April 28th at our SCMS Parent Involvement Night to discuss scheduling with all 8th graders. SCHS representatives will follow up the next week to answer questions and gather information. Contact [email protected]. Habit 7 – Spencer County Drama Department SHARPENED THEIR SAW at KTA Middle Grades Theater Festival! The Competition Club earned all Excellent and Superior markings for our production of Heubner the Reluctant. Also, Morgan McCuley, Mahalla Bell, Olivia Bullington, Connor Strothman, Tyler Richendollar, Jonathan Antonelli, Coleman Wheatley, & Kristin Douglas received the Best technical Award, Kylie Barron received the All-Star Cast Award, and Matthew Louis got BEST ACTOR award! Gavin Phillips & Kellan Wade won the Rising Stars award for their live action PSA best script! Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS
