We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Parents can BE PROACTIVE, by attending Parent Involvement Night on March 5 at 6pm at SCMS. There will be a seven period rotation, allowing parents to see each of their child’s teachers. Topics will be grade relevant (8th grade – HS Scheduling, AP Course Requirements, Scholarships, etc.) Habit 2 – Art students have BEGAN WITH THE END IN MIND, planning for this weekends “Art Club Lock-in”. Students will paint more than 20 murals selected to beautify the school walls at SCMS; centered on the Seven Habits of Highly Successful Teens. Thanks to Ms. Larue and the Art Club! Habit 3 – Let’s PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST by welcoming Mr. Wes Jackson, as our new 8th grade Social Studies Teacher. Mr. Jackson, has a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree from the University of Kentucky, with previous experience from Lafayette High School and B. Michael Caudill Middle School. Habit 4 – Ms. Shipley and the Grizzly Choir are THINKING WIN-WIN, by collaborating with the WU Singers on March 9. The WU Singers will share and perform with the SCMS and SCHS Choir’s in a day sure to be both educational and exciting. Habit 5 – SCMS will SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD; the MAP testing window on March 16 – April 17, will show what we know. MAP scores are used in various ways such as course placement & providing interventions to students in need. Habit 6 – SCMS is SYNERGIZING with Anti-Bullying Guru Scott Harvey, to educate all students on “Cyber Safety” & “Anti-Bullying Tactics” during a school-wide assembly on Feb. 26th at 1pm. Mr. Harvey will be speaking to ALL interested parents at 6pm in the Auditorium. Habit 7 – We encourage everyone to SHARPEN THE SAW and volunteer to be a part of the 2015-2016 Parent Teacher Student Organization. Nominations forms for PTSO are attached to this email. Deadline for nominations is March 3. Voting will take place March 5 at Parent Involvement Night. Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS
