To: All SCMS Stakeholders
We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Social Media is a major concern for parents & schools alike. According to a Kaiser Family Foundation study, kids spend over 7 hours a day connected to electronic devices. YOU can BE PROACTIVE by monitoring your child’s facebook, Instagram, text messages, etc. by clicking here! Habit 2 – SCMS continues to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND, by assessing student on basic skills at the beginning, mid-point, and end of the school year. Winter MAP data shows improvement in nine of ten tested areas; beating the nation in all but two. Great job students!!! Habit 3 – Grizzly Dance PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST, taking first place in District last weekend and first place in Regionals this weekend. We are honored to have this group represent Spencer County Middle School on Feb. 28 at State! Everyone come out and support SCMS Dance! Habit 4 – The Grizzly Cheer squad was THINKING WIN-WIN this past weekend, finishing 2nd in the State, and qualifying for Nationals. This team was phenomenal all season! To watch the squad’s Regional Championship performance, click here! Habit 5 – Spencer County Middle School will SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD, when 8th grade students participate in the NAEP test on Feb. 13. For more information on what is coined “The Nation’s Report Card”, click here. Habit 6 – SCMS is SYNERGIZING with Anti-Bullying Guru Scott Harvey, to educate all students on “Cyber Safety” & “Anti-Bullying Tactics” during a schoolwide assembly on Feb. 19th at 1pm. Mr. Harvey will be speaking to ALL interested parents at 6pm in the Gym. Tell a friend & see you there! Habit 7 – All students are invited to SHARPEN THE SAW this Friday night at our PTSO sponsored school dance. At lunch students are selecting their own music to be played and a fun photo booth will also be on display. Tickets are $6 presale during lunch this week, and $8 at the door. Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS
