We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Students can BE PROACTIVE by turning in all assignments. Due to the recent snow day, mid-term reports will now come home on Feb. 19. The third quarter is scheduled to end on March 17. A very useful tool for parents is the Infinite Campus App; where you can check grades and receive push notifications daily. Habit 2 – Congratulations to our current A.R. leaders who BEGAN WITH THE END IN MIND: 5th – Cameron Emmons, 4th – Abby Watts, 3rd – Dawson Sheble, 2nd – Erika Montgomery, 1st – Emily McGill. Habit 3 – SCMS is PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST by recognizing ERQ Writing Leaders: Belle Waldridge, Caitlyn Watson, Chance Goodwin, Ian Moore, Emily Sibert, and JD Comacho. Habit 4 – THINK WIN-WIN by signing your student up for Summer School, which will be held on June 20th – 30th & July 11th – 21st, Mon-Thurs from 9:00 until 3:00 each day as in the past. Summer School will not be in session the week of July 4th. For more information: [email protected]. Habit 5 – The winner of our district spelling bee is Charley Miller from SCES. Runner-up is Jillian Kenney from SCMS. Charley will be SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by competing in the Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee on March 5th at Kentucky Center for the Arts. Habit 6 – Karen Leff and SCMS are SYNERGIZING with leaders in Spencer County to provide a mentoring program for our middle school students. Grizzly P.A.L.S. (Positively Affecting Lives of Students) begins today and includes over forty community and school leaders that will dedicate a minimum of one hour per week to their mentees. Habit 7 – Congratulations to Mr. Collins, Ms. Parnell and the SCMS Academic Team members who SHARPENED THEIR SAW by winning the District Quick Recall competition over Bardstown. This amazing group was one question from going to state on Saturday. Kudos to eighth grader Josh Dunkleberger for placing second overall in Regional Social Studies, and sixth grader Jack Kennedy who finished fifth overall in Regional Social Studies. They will represent us well at State Governor’s Cup! Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS
