Hello Grizzly Family,
Today marks our first full week back with most all our students in over a year. I want to thank our parents, students, and staff, for persevering through the most unlikely of circumstances. So many uncertainties, often from week to week. Spencer County is truly a special place! We are closer to normal than we've been, however we are still taking every safety precaution possible. Cleaning of desks and tables happens after each class period and lunch. Everyone wears masks all day with the exception to an AM/PM mask break for students outside. With that said, we understand parents want to be a part of this year's 8th grade promotion. Frankly, I'm more empathetic to this class than any other, as they've been robbed of so much of their middle school experience. The 8th grade class picnic at the lake is scheduled for May 28th. Due to state capacity limitations, this year's 8th grade promotion will be limited to two tickets per student for attendees, given the week of graduation. We will be splitting promotion into two ceremonies. Students from Ms. Birch's Team will graduate at 9am, and students from Ms. Kennedy's Team will graduate at 10am, both on June 2. Our virtual students will also be split with last names A-M attending the 9am and last names N-Z attending 10pm. Immediately following each ceremony, we will have a photo op area setup outside the gymnasium in the grass. 6th, 7th, & 8th, Grade Teacher's Choice awards will be given out in class. Congratulations to all our students who participated in the School Drama Performance of Cinderella. I think SCES teacher Gina Pollett said it best, "The show was amazing last night!!!!! The set, the lights, the sound, the costumes, the acting......... amazing!!! I knew the casting was so good, but I realized last night just how good!" Thank you Ms. Pollett, and thanks to all who attended and assisted. Welcome, Ms. Tammy Moorman, our new Drug Free Communities Director in Spencer County and Shaya Hadden, our new Seven Counties School Based Therapist. Summer School will be mandatory for any student failing a semester of Reading and/or Math, and is also available to other students. Dates are: June 7-10, June 14-17, June 21-24, June 28-July 1, July 12-15, & July 19-22. For more information contact [email protected] We WILL be participating in the annual KPREP State Assessment for all students. The test will be administered to virtual students the week of May 17, and face to face the week of May 24. Please mark these dates on your calendar. It was absolutely refreshing getting our students back in the building last week. Appreciation is a word that keeps coming to my mind. The things I took for granted somewhat are now glowingly obvious. Watching a ballgame, seeing the smiles, or getting a hug. So, seeing teachers and students interact has been a blessing. Wednesday Tutoring - Last week we had over 40 students show up on Wednesday to work on assignments. This is for ALL STUDENTS. If you are behind or just need tutoring, our teachers are here and working with individuals and small groups. GBB is now available Monday through Friday. Click on the link to sign up. See you Wednesday! https://forms.gle/sLDc69FWdWaBCpwy9 Report Cards - were sent home on Friday and will be sent home today (Jan. 11). Nurse Dippel - asks that parents continue to monitor their children, checking for symptoms daily, and notifying us if anyone in the household or someone in direct contact has symptoms or covid-19. Contact her at [email protected] . Athletics - Volleyball Tryouts this week Tuesday and Thursday 3-5. Softball and Baseball tryouts are slated for the second week of February. A-Team - Good luck to our Academic Team and coaches, as they look for yet another District Championship, Tomorrow (Jan. 12). Go Grizzlies! MM Hello Grizzly Families,
We are so excited to have our students back with us starting today. I view this as the light at the end of the covid tunnel. We are aware that some students are behind and need additional support. It is for that reason that we will be providing individual and small group tutoring for ALL STUDENTS each Wednesday, starting tomorrow, from 10am until 2pm. Transportation is NOT provided at this time. Students will need to be dropped off at the bus entrance and will sign into our 21st Century GBB Program while having their temperatures taken. All teachers will be available to assist students with current and past assignments. This is also available to all virtual students as well. Mr. Gross will have the computer lab open and will be assisting students on the Edgenuity platform. Lunch will be provided. Any additional questions you contact me at [email protected] Respectfully, MM Hello Grizzly Family,
Now that we feel somewhat confident that Gov. Beshear will not be making another executive order mandating virtual only learning for students in Kentucky, we look forward to getting our students back in the building on Tuesday (Jan. 5th). Mr. Adams has been encouraging state and local officials to allow us to return to in person instruction and we are very thankful this is happening. We will be on the hybrid model for "face to face" students just as we did 1st semester. If you are a Monday/Tuesday student, you will remain Monday and Tuesday in person and we will utilize google classroom for the other three days each week. The same for Thursday/Friday students. Wednesdays, we will be bringing in students that need additional help and interventions. If your son/daughter would like to participate in our small groups on Wednesday's please contact me at [email protected] . Grizzlies Beyond the Bell will also be a tutoring option for student support throughout the semester. Our "virtual only" students will continue on the Edgenuity platform with monitoring by their virtual teachers. If you are returning from "virtual only" to "face to face" and have not received a schedule, we are finalizing those today and tomorrow. You can email: [email protected] and [email protected] . May 2021, be a blessed year for you all! Happy New Years! MM Hello Grizzly Family,
I'm sure you have heard the latest news that Governor Bashear has mandated that all schools go virtual starting this Monday until at least January 4th. Let me be clear. We already have one group of "Virtual" students that have not attended face to face at all and utilize the Edgenuity platform. That will remain the same until January as planned. For students that have been Hybrid (face to face, two days per week) you will now have class from home through zoom with Google Classroom five days per week. This is precisely the way we started the year. If you are like me, you can't remember last week leave off August. This means all Hybrid students will now zoom: Math and Science classes on Monday/Wednesday, English and Social Studies on Tuesday/Thursday, and the Arts on Friday. Click here for the 6th Grade Schedule Click here for the 7th Grade Schedule Click here for the 8th Grade Schedule *Note daily meeting times are now: 10am, 11am, 1pm, & 2pm* I have three daughter's (3rd, 7th, 12th), so I share your concerns and understand that the struggle is real. Teaching Ashton, Alexis, & Addison, is far more difficult than running a school. Working and teaching my kids' is near impossible, so we've come up with some best practices to assist you in this transition. Click here for virtual tips for parents As far as extra-curricular goes, we are continuing with rehearsals today for our spring play. We still hope this production can occur, only time will tell. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association met Tuesday and decided to postpone fall sports. We fall under that umbrella somewhat, and follow their recommendations. That said, our athletic director Scott Noel, along with SCMS coaches will be informing parents and players on the specifics of when we can practice again and begin playing games. As for the immediate future, it's not happening. I leave you with this, I hate that Alexis' junior and now senior year isn't as she expected. I hate that being Addison's principal for 6th and now 7th grade doesn't look like I expected. I hate that critical grades for reading like 2nd and 3rd have been altered for Ashton. However, I thank God they are healthy. During this time let us all thank God for the many blessings we take for granted daily. And let us pray for all those that are sick or all those that were essentially laid off yesterday just prior to rent being due in December and before Christmas presents could be bought for the kids. If there is anything I can do in anyway, please contact me at [email protected] Sincerely, MM Good afternoon Grizzly Families,
We are quickly approaching the Holiday's, so planning for next semester has begun. If you are VIRTUAL ONLY student, please click this link https://forms.gle/4xyx54WkqcsXvkqf8 to inform us of your plans. You will need to complete one for each student in the household. Students that are currently hybrid face to face do not need to complete. This is for students that did not attend in person for the first semester. We are so proud of our very own, Casey DeSilvey who just won the 2020 KY CROSS COUNTRY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP on Saturday. Casey was 1st out of 400 other competitors to claim the title. He also led our boys team to a top ten overall state finish. Others contributing to the top ten finish were: Graham Dwyer, Buck Murphy, Ridge Revers, Jakob Satterly, Earl Rose and Matthew Cook. Click here for this week's episode of The Grizzly News!!! Thanks to everyone for helping us stay as safe as possible during this time. Please continue to check your son/daughter for symptoms prior to sending them to school. Please contact our school nurse, [email protected] to let her know if your child is having to quarantine or having covid-like symptoms. To thank our veteran's for their service to protect our freedom, our Grizzly News crew created a special video of appreciation. Click here!!! Have blessed day, MM Spencer County Middle School Girls Basketball will have tryout sign ups on Thursday June 25 at the SCMS front parking lot from 6-8pm and on Friday June 26th from 10am-12pm. This is for all 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Actual Tryouts will be held on Monday June 29th and Tuesday June 30th. There will be 5 time slots available for tryouts. Thanks and look forward to seeing on Thursday or Friday.
