To: All SCMS Stakeholders
We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – We ask our students to BE PROACTIVE, and SCMS 6th grader Jenna Newton did just that this week when she proactively asked Ms. Kennedy if the students in her Reading class could bring their vocabulary lists to homework help to assure everyone earn credit. Great job Jenna! Habit 2 – All 8th graders will BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND Monday as they take the EXPLORE Assessment. This Pre-ACT is given to every 8th grader in Kentucky, and will determine future High School course offerings. Please encourage students to get sleep and give a great effort. Habit 3 – Spencer County Schools PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST this week when administrators from across the district participated in our first Learning Walk of the year at SCMS. Everything we do center’s around student achievement! Habit 4 – We’re THINKING WIN-WIN, by inviting all parents to attend our Parent Involvement Night at SCMS on September 23. We look forward to fun activities sponsored by our G/T program. Academic dialogue between parents and teachers is always a win-win. Habit 5 – We elected to SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD this week with our annual “Shop with a Student” night. Nearly $2000 was spent by SCMS educator’s on student needs. Thanks to all that participated. Habit 6 – SCMS, PTSO, and FRYC are partnering to SYNERGIZE; in organizing the first of four ‘Leader in Me’ luncheons. This Thursday (September 18th), more than twenty local and state leaders are scheduled to teach the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens to all students! Habit 7 – Ms. Steege, and the SCMS Drama Department began to SHARPEN THE SAW this week; casting over one hundred students in a role for the November 13-16, Alice in Wonderland production. Congratulations to all cast and crew! Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS
