To: All SCMS Stakeholders
We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Students can BE PROACTIVE by turning in all assignments. Fourth quarter mid-term ends April 26 and mid-terms will be sent home May 3. A very useful tool for parents is the Infinite Campus App; where you can check grades and receive push notifications daily. Habit 2 – Let’s BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND by looking at key dates as we go down the stretch: KPREP is May 10-13 & 16. 8th Grade Graduation is scheduled for May 25. All Students Last Day, 6th/7th Awards Day & 8th Grade Belle Trip will be on May 26. Teacher’s closing day will be May 27th. Habit 3 – Next week we PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST by hosting the first ever Leader in Me ‘Student Summit’. Representatives from Franklin Covey will be on site along with nearly 100 students from five schools (Carroll Co., Owen County, Trimble Co., Shelby Co., and Spencer). This is event is centered on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and will be 100% student led. Habit 4 – All parents and students are invited to our Spring Parent Involvement Night on April 28th at 5:30pm, where we will be THINKING WIN-WIN. We also would like to invite all 5th grade parents and students to this event where sixth grade teachers will be on hand to meet and greet. A question and answer session is scheduled to provide valuable information and ease the transition to middle school. Habit 5 – SCHS and Mr. Haun will be SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD on April 28th at 6pm to discuss scheduling with all 8th graders. SCHS representatives will follow up the next week to answer questions and gather information. Contact [email protected]. Habit 6 – Time to SYNERGIZE; SBDM Parent Election for the 2016-17 school year. Nomination forms are available in the front office of Spencer County Middle School (attached). Nomination forms must be completed and returned back to the school office no later than April 22nd by the end of the school day. Parents may vote for SBDM representatives during the school day in the school office on April 28th or vote that evening at Parent Involvement Night. Habit 7 – The Grizzly Beyond the Bell program appeared this week in the statewide publication “Kentucky Teacher”. The feature article captured students SHARPENING THEIR SAW as they do daily at SCMS. http://www.kentuckyteacher.org/features/2016/04/an-attractive-after-school-option/ Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS
