To: All SCMS Stakeholders
We are now living The Leader in Me’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. To practice what we teach, my weekly correspondence follows the 7 Habits theme: Habit 1 – Reminder: Parents can BE PROACTIVE when a student is absent - an excuse and/or note must be turned in within 3 days of the student’s return (limit to 5 parent notes per school year). Habit 2 – At Spencer County Middle, we try to BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND! 3rd Qtr. Mid-term reports will be sent home the week of Feb. 13th. No School for students on Feb. 17-20. Habit 3 – Congratulations, to Coach Collins/Parnell and the Grizzly Academic Team for PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST and winning the District 42 Governor’s Cup Championship on Saturday. We have nine students advancing to Regionals along with our FPS and Quick Recall Teams. Those nine are: Nick Sea (Math 2nd), Rico Walker (Sci. 1st), Hunter DeRouck (Sci. 2nd), Jonathon Antonelli (Comp. 2nd, SS 1st), Jack Kennedy (SS 2nd & A/H 1st), Nick Gray (SS 4th), & Emma Parnell (Comp. 3rd). Good luck on Feb. 4th! Habit 4 – SCMS 6th grader Jared Marston was THINKING WIN-WIN by finishing first in last week’s school wide Spelling Bee! Jared will be competing in the District Spelling Bee this Thursday. Habit 5 – Our student writing leaders are SEEKING FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD by creating exemplars of distinguished writing to model for other students. Thanks to: Lorelae Cox, Mikayla Le, Emily Gillum, Nora Knight, David Hart, Tytus Williams, Hayley Wethington, Brynn Cooper, Grace Collins, Ashleigh Jones, Lucas Hornback, Cat Collins, Sierra Knapper, and Logan Peters. Habit 6 – Let’s SYNERGIZE! Kentucky Bluegrass Award book club is meeting in the library on Thursday, Jan. 23rd from 2:45 - 3:30. Students will read books from the grades 6-8 master list and vote for the book they feel is most deserving of the 2017 KBA. Habit 7 – Come out and SHARPEN THE SAW this week – Boys D1 basketball at St. Charles tonight and D2 at home vs Washington Co. Boys D1 Basketball vs St. Joseph tomorrow night. D2 basketball at St. Gregory on Thursday. Good luck to SCMS Lego Robotics who will be competing at the state competition on Feb. 4th at NKU. & Jr. Beta which will once again be competing at the state competition in Lexington, on Feb. 16. Respectfully, Matt Mercer Principal SCMS
